Melaleuca ericifolia
Price:
$12.00
In Stock
4" Pot
This has grown in Portland Oregon for 7 years where it has handled the winters. Small creamy yellow flowers clothe the heather-like branches in late spring. A most unusual evergreen shrub and the hardiest of the Melaleucas. Full sun and good drainage. Portland gets more summer heat than we do which ripens the wood making it more hardy. We're lucky to crack 75F here.

Sometimes we grow plants that are simply not hardy in our garden just because we like them and this Tasman Honey Myrtle is just such a plant. While there a few areas in the Pacific Northwest where this will be happy, our garden is not among them. This evergreen shrub is a denizen of the coastal Tasmanian heathlands where it thrives in moist soil and can reach 10' in height. As the common name infers, the profuse and fuzzy mauve flowers are an Apian Siren's Song as the bees love the flowers. Great where temperatures don't drop below 25F and there are gardens like that as we regularly curse them when we are in the grip of an outflow from the Yukon. Otherwise, a swell container plant for indoors during the worst of winter.
