Gnome Firethorn. As the name suggests, this is a more compact variety getting just 6' high and 8' wide. Lots of small white flowers in May followed by brilliant orange berries which ripen in September and persist well into winter. This is one of the more cold hardy selections and is a very tough evergreen shrub (deciduous in cold areas like Missouri) that is suitable for informal hedging. Any wild branch exceeding its area is easily corrected by a simple nip. Works good to keep the neighbors on their side of the line as it sports some very nice thorns.

A Hinkley collection from western China where it frequents scrubby situations and often is the showiest thing on the road edges. Nice large shrub with lots of white flowers followed by orange berries and reasonably armored with thorns. Tired of those kids cutting through? This will slow them down. The berries are a good second tier source of food for the birds.
