We nearly wept when our friend Duane West, former old Heronswood manager, brought us 2 huge pots of both a dark red Trillium chloropetalum and a gorgeous pink T. chloropetalum saying "I've had these for 28 years and now it's your turn."  These are young plants grown from seed from the good pink one.  This Bay Area native is a gorgeous species with lightly mottled leaves when young and will develop into a very impressive clump.  (Sue immediately divided Duane's big plants - she's got propagator's blood flowing in her veins)  This particular clone is easily the first to start growing and our stock plants in our cool greenhouse are always up with flower buds in January while everyone else still slumbers.  It will be later out in the garden but it is eager to get going!
