Gallon Pot
This is an fine selection from Holland of Korean Fir. This is very dwarf - just an inch or less of growth per year and a 10 year old plant might be just 8" high by a 12" across. This makes one of those nice rounded buns which I am inclined to pat and Sue could testify to the veracity of that inclination. Great rock garden plant.
Aconitum japonicum

Quart Pot
Monkshood. This is a fine wildflower from Japan making attractive clumps with cowled dusky lavender flowers. This has been an easy doer increasing easily and the clumps are a snap to divide if you want more. And we always do. This not one for the sunny garden but best in morning sun or light shade. This doesn't get tall staying under 3' and isn't anything to worry about staking. Just a quietly lovely plant except for the unfortunate derisive comments it hurls at passing deer as it is completely unpalatable. Fortunately this commentary lies outside the range of human hearing so there is little chance of offending invited guests.

Small Band Pot
Our collection from one of the highest points in the Wumingshan during the Chongqing-Guizhou-Guangxi Expedition in the fall of 2010. We had reached as far as we could on the trail following the western ridge and as we paused to take in one last panoramic view of the lesser peaks arrayed before us, we looked down and there sprawling atop the scrub was this climbing Monkshood. Seed heads were larger than we expected and it has been with anticipation that we have waited for this to bloom which a few did this fall. The flowers are of good size with a bit of variation from soft lavender to mostly a very pleasant medium blue. One seedling is a strange double with the overlapping petals reduced to an Elizabethan collar around the business parts. Now there's a collector's plant! Let us know if yours turns out to be something unique and we'll dicker. Perennial herbaceous vine to 8'-12' dying back in late fall. These are flowering size.
Actaea elata
Actaea elata

Quart Pot
This used to be Cimicifuga elata but is now an Actaea and commonly known as Bugbane. This is one of our of natives found in small areas in the Olympics and more widely west of the Cascades in damp lowland forests in southern Washington and NW Oregon. A good plant with broad maple-ish leaves and tall stems with wands of white flowers sometimes tinged in light pink in late summer. This can get 6'-8' tall but most of that is skinny vertical height so while it is tall, it is not bulky. These have their provenance from SW Washington being seed-grown from a plant we got from our friend Diana Reeck at Collector's Nursery.

Small Band Pot  It is easy enough to get a fern with rich, deep green leaves but sometimes that dark shade garden is just crying out for a little contrast and this fern will provide some subtle relief.  A deciduous species that gets just 18"-24" tall with fronds supported by wiry black stems.  A moisture lover, don't torture it in dry shade.
Adonis amurensis
Adonis amurensis
Price: $20.00
(Out of Stock)

4" Pot  One of the class acts of the spring ephemeral parade, this very hardy Japanese species starts hitting the stage in February with yellow flower buds and soon followed by finely divided fern-like foliage.  March is when it really happens, at least here in the Northwest, as these cheery buttercup flowers defy the gray skies which born and bred Washington natives miss if we have too long of a stretch of sun, say if we get into week of blue skies.  This is a fine plant for the rock garden or special niche and expect it to go dormant by late spring.  These are nice divisions which have already flowered with sturdy growth and are starting to root out having been potted in late winter.
Adonis multiflora 'Sandanzaki'
Adonis amurensis 'Sandanzaki'
Price: $35.00
(Out of Stock)

Quart Pot
Choice rarity from Japan with stunning very early spring flowers. This is a delectable spring ephemeral ideal under deciduous shade where it can bloom in the sun and be shaded later in the season so quite happy in half shade. 'Sandanzaki' means "triple blooming" in Japanese. Growing all these different plants is giving us an odd smattering of different languages beyond our mainstays of ordering a beer and asking for the bathroom. Quite impervious to cold but is a real sissy when it comes to slugs so check on it! This makes an impressive plant in a pot as well. We've seen photos of full pots of this in flower on the show benches in the UK and it is breathtaking. We have offered this before under the species name multiflora but our two year old reference may have been out of date which had amurensis merged into multiflora.  It's a cutthroat world of taxonomic botany out there!

Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate'
Price: $10.00

Medium Band Pot
White Snakeroot. A release from the Mt Cuba Center in Delaware and selected for the richly chocolate colored foliage. This is a very hardy perennial and well named because just like sex, chocolate sells. (I've notice that often one leads to the other) Mid to late summer broccoli heads of small white flowers. Low maintenance.
Allium karataviense subsp. henrikii
Allium karataviense subsp. henrikii
Price: $15.00

Bulbs
One of the choicest Alliums to be had which was found east of Tashkent in the mid 90's and named by Janis Ruksans for Henrik Zetterlund. Like a regular Allium karataviense but so much better in all aspects. Larger and broader blue-green leaves and bigger flower heads of rich rose. Good drainage & summer dry.
Allium nevskianum
Allium nevskianum

Bulbs
A must-have for those smitten by the ornamental onions and this rarity will not disappoint. From hot and stony Afghanistan and Tadjikistan, this resembles the excellent Allium karataviense but is larger in all parts with bigger flowers of deeper pink. Gorgeous paired leaves.
Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis'
Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis'
Price: $15.00

4" Pot
Awesome Cutleaf Alder. This selection of this European species makes our own native Alnus rubra weep in envy. The extreme ornament of the foliage makes us weep as well but with tears of joy. Rapid growth in rich moist bottomland, slower in average settings.
Anemone nemorosa 'Green Fingers'
Anemone nemorosa 'Green Fingers Group'
Price: $7.00
In Stock

4" Pot
A bewitching Wood Anemone which is more petite than some clones. This makes a dense carpet sample of coarse ferny foliage and small white flowers with a purplish reverse.  So just what sets this apart from the all the other white selections?  The working parts of the flower, the stamens in particular, have become thickened and greenly tumescent which I find rather appealing.   The degree of this unabashed happily concupiscent display varies from flower to flower and so is perhaps best to just refer to it as "Green Fingers Group'.  Regardless of the nomenclature, I know I am equally happy to see it bloom each spring.
Anemone nemorosa 'Royal Blue'

4" Pot
Large lavender blue flowers with a darker reverse grants this little slowly creeping Wood Anemone its own small fiefdom in the shade garden while it is in bloom. Very pretty indeed. Of course by mid summer the peasants and serfs rise up with scythes and cudgels to reclaim their land but next year the glorious cycle of rule and revolution is repeated.

4" Pot
One of the quiet stars of our shade garden is this cross between rich yellow Anemone ranunculoides and white Anemone nemorosa. The result is a vigorous small scale shade loving groundcover with profuse primrose yellow flowers. Perfect as a planting under larger plants. Moist.

Small Band Pot
Totally fun selection which manages to combine class, whimsy and garden merit in one small package. This little tuberous gem just gets better with each successive year making nice clumps with lots of flowers if you can keep from dividing them like we do! Light green double pinwheel flowers.
Anemonopsis macrophylla

4" Band Pots
A refined shade plant that would grace any plant connoisseur's garden yet is perfectly happy to hang with us average Joes. Leaves evoking Anemone and pendant flowers combining pastels and lavenders in an understated parasol of exquisite design and dimension. A plant wasted on the masses so let's keep it to ourselves. It has been pleasingly tough and durable in our shade garden.

Quart Pot  This bewitching little Columbine hits me at some visceral level every time it flowers.  The fine blue-green foliage is perfect with the narrow yellow flowers and their impossibly long spurs.   Being childless, I can only imagine seeing your little blonde daughter in her first Easter dress and shiny new shoes - it is that kind of feeling.

Quart Pot
Dwarf Goat's Beard. One of the top perennials of all time. Tightly packed ferny foliage and short dense plumes of white flowers in early to mid summer. Hardy as all get out and completely trouble free. If you screw this up then we beg you - please give up gardening. Just not very dry, that's all.
Asarum canadense 'Eco Choice'
Asarum canadense 'Eco Choice'
Price: $9.00

Quart Pots
Seldom offered selection by Don Jacobs of Eco Gardens, this has exceptional vigor and and very dense growth habit. Really an ideal groundcover for that small area if you are going for the monoculture look as this is going to own its little piece of ground. But not in a bad way - our patch is finally big enough to share. Nice under taller perennials such as Leucosceptrum or shrubs. Heart shaped deciduous leaves shade funny small urn-shaped brownish flowers. A denizen of the moist northern woods, this is a good addition to the shade garden and seemingly tough as nails given moist shade.
Asphodelus aestivus
Asphodelus aestivus
Price: $10.00

Medium Band Pot
This has grown - quite literally - into one of our favorite plants. Much like an Eremurus or Foxtail Lily in effect as it gets long basal strappy leaves and a tall branched flower spike with lots of pale peach tinted white flowers. The foliage withers away in summer and we leave the dried seedheads standing tall.

Large Band Pot
Hard to find Aster in the UK let alone here in the colonies but we have plant-enabler Jim Fox to thank for scoring us a bit on one of his trips to England.   Fairly large double flowers of pink-lavender (at least according to my masculine color processing which Sue often questions when I get into the pink-mauve-lavender-violet-purple range.  "That's not pink - that's purple!") Three to five feet depending on whether you decapitate in early summer or not in pursuit of bushiness.  When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster 'Kylie'

Large Band Pot
Award of Merit Aster from England which makes a profuse cloud of small pale pink flowers in large billowy display on arching stems. Nice tall stems and thin fine-textured leaves adds to the whole package. Pretty exceptional in the realm of Asters and one which Carol Klein calls "an immensely pretty plant". 'Kylie' is also a rare interspecific hybrid between Aster novae-angliae 'Andenken an Alma Potschke' and Aster ericoides 'White Heather'. We know Asters have been segregated into a bunch of unpleasant sounding genera but we're not there yet. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster 'Mary's White'
Aster 'Mary's White'
Price: $15.00
In Stock

Quart Pot
Choice white Aster that our friend Jim Fox got from Beth Chatto and shared a wee bit with us. This was found at the Beth Chatto nursery by Beth's daughter Mary and we are guessing that it must be pretty damned good to be named such. We hope to introduce Aster 'Canela' and 'Callie' next year after our own daughters. 'Mary's White' has a good constitution with sturdy stems and good-sized white flowers not surprisingly. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster 'Vasterival'
Aster 'Vasterival'
Price: $9.00

Quart Pot
Our thanks to one of horticulture's good guys, Jim Fox for bringing us a plant of this lovely Aster from one of his trips to the UK.  We'll have to go with him some time to learn how to balance plant shopping and carousing but now that we think on it, all of us regard plant shopping as carousing..........we can't be getting old - no, we're just wiser.  After all, that Aster will still be there in the morning.  This was named for Princess Sturdza's garden at Le Vasterival in France and that should be recommendation enough.  Neither pink nor lavender but firmly positioned in that descriptive Bermuda Triangle of the in-between which allows it to mingle effortlessly with a broad palette of colors.  A vigorous grower to 5' with deep royal plum colored stems and flowers for weeks in September.   When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster cordifolia 'White Chief'

Quart Pot
Our buddy Jim Fox brought us a bit of this new Aster cordifolius hybrid from England and upon checking the 2011-2012 RHS Plantfinder, we see it has only one source which is the National Collection for Asters at Old Court Nurseries. We were quite pleased by this as you might imagine and also pleased to see that we can still bust into a reasonable Snoopy dance. We carefully nurtured this treasure and as soon as it got some size, we immediately cut it to bits to be able to offer it to you. We have no garden experience with this yet due to the repeated decapitations but anything described as having "clouds of small white flowers in October" works for us. A tall grower to 6' unless you kneecap it in June to make it shorter and bushier. We tend to go tall. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster ericoides 'Pink Cloud'
Aster ericoides 'Pink Cloud'
Price: $9.00
(Out of Stock)

Quart Pot
This repetitive lauding of our friend Jim Fox for bringing us cool Asters from the UK could become wearisome and we promise to stop after just a few more.  This selection of Aster ericoides was granted the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society and in the UK this is the horticultural equivalent of being knighted.  We are unlikely to be knighted anytime soon but we can have this distinguished Aster in our gardens.  This is a lower and bushier plant getting just 3 feet high but that 3 feet is a glorious billow of thousands of small light pink flowers in the fall once it reaches maturity. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.
Aster novi-belgii 'Autumn Rose'

Quart Pot
An uncommon Aster brought to us from the UK by that warp and weft of the NW horticultural scene, Jim Fox. Jim has passed along many treasures to us and we are happy to spread the love. This is a vigorous and floriferous plant with Fall flowers of a good rosy pink on 4' stems and nothing says Fall to us like.........well, really, it is the yellows and oranges and reds that we think of but why not shake up tradition a little? Listed by only two nurseries in the 2011-2012 RHS Plantfinder. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.

Medium Band Pot
Uncommon and exceptional selection brought back from England for us by that discerning horticulturist and Northwest garden icon Mr. Jim Fox whose eye for beauty is well known among the NW cognoscenti. He can stray to the flamboyant trashy but not in this instance. Big rich blue flowers. When shipped in the fall, we'll need to cut this plant back.

A big look for the shade with magnificent rounded leaves to 3' wide and early summer panicles of plumed white flowers on stalks up to five feet high. Loves a rich moist soil and shovelful or two of cow, horse, goat or llama poo would be most welcome.

This sterile deciduous clumper is a cross between the American Lady Fern and the Japanese Painted Fern. Ghostly gray-green fronds to 3' long shimmers in the shade garden especially when deployed against a dark background. Hardy as all get out and easy - just not too dry.
