This is a columbine that simply appeared in the garden as such is wont to do. The new foliage is a bright golden yellow in sun and a vivid chartreuse in shade.  The raspberry colored flowers are better than we had hoped and is likely an iteration of 'Woodside Gold' although how it came to be here is a mystery.  In our shade garden, this grows in association with Rodgersia nepalense, Trochodendron aralioides, Maianthemum henryi, Disporum longistylum 'Night Heron', Cardiocrinum 'Big & Pink', Hepatica yamatutai, Galanthus 'John Gray' and Rhododendron flinckii.  All of these plants we planted intentionally and are fairly proud of but what is the plant that people ask about when they come out of shade garden?  The volunteer golden leafed Aquilegia.  For two years we kept saying "It's a volunteer columbine - we didn't plant it"  We did wise up and collected seed so this year we started saying "It is a fantastic Columbine that appeared in our garden and we will finally have it available later this summer.  The time has arrived.  Here it is.
