Description

This a plant in our shade garden that always attracts the attention of the woody plant collector. Long, entire, elliptical and large dark green leaves well toothed on the margins gives this Barberry a distinctive look, Familiar yellow flowers complete the look. Collected in Sikkim by Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones from Crûg Farm, this could be hardier and if it were, it would vault near the top tier of our favorites. Normal winters here (teens F) sees this frozen back considerably but it has always regrown and been a feature each year. Mild winters here it does great and two years of growth can have stems to 4' or even 5'. We used to curse the winter coppicing of this plant but we don't have room for it where it is if it didn't get frozen back and the vigorous new growth is just so primo that it really is the best thing to have happen. Yes, we do look for silver linings here!
