Description
This is from a collection in China by Quarry Hill Botanic Garden in California which is home to a staggeringly good repository of Asian plants. We love the garden and exchange plants regularly with them as some of our collections are going to do so much better for them in their climate. This Disporum was collected originally as D. megalanthum and they have not yet flowered theirs in part perhaps due to their summer heat. Our plant from them did bloom this year with pale whitish flowers and we keyed it to D. longistylum and independently verified by Aaron Floden. This species is represented in cultivation by various forms including the clones 'Night Heron' and 'Green Giant' and this differs from these by having rounder and seemingly glossier foliage and just "looking" different. While we had hoped for the D. megalanthum, we don't mind a new and distinct form of this excellent garden plant which we expect to reach 4' tall and be evergreen in mild winters, This species has proved to be tolerant of full sun in our cool sun coastal climate but is assuredly happy in part to light shade.
