There is nothing gloomy about Glumicalyx because it has chocolate scented flowers and we all know chocolate is a natural antidepressant and good for you.   Tough South African perennial subshrub which makes a low clump of evergreen leaves which sprout 10" stems of clustered white bells which open to orange-red.  Full to half sun, adequate moisture and good drainage, this handles our winters getting to 18" and 3' wide or so fairly quickly.  A friend grew one in a tall container and it looked grand spilling over the lip.  This will look great this summer.  It might even be deer resistant since the foliage is musky scented when bruised but we haven't tested it in that area.  Probably the most damage will come from your friends who will have to smell the flowers and then want a slip to start at home.
