Description

These are second-generation plants from Josh McCullough's collection from northern Vietnam on the flanks of Fansipan, This means they are seed grown from the plant grown from the original seed collection. These bloom and fruit very young at just 3 years of age, sometimes even at 2 years and appear to be the same species as our previously offered Schefflera sp. FMWJ 13336. Attractive slender leaves on a small shrub to perhaps 4' or 5' tall. The small white flowers are tightly clustered in small balls and held in an open branched panicle. Hardiness is untested but our intuition suggests it won't be as tough as some and likely a good zone 8 candidate. This has fared well in mild gardens here in the Puget Sound and needs to be tested in colder gardens so we will be planting some out this fall of 2014 and giving it a more serious test. And here are the test results from what was the weather equivalent of a pop quiz on physics given to English majors. Actively growing with soft growth from a long warm fall and right into a week long arctic blast with 3 consecutive nights of 15F followed by two similar events in December and January proved fatal. That said, the same plant is unscathed in a friend's garden in nearby Kingston and looks fine in numerous other local gardens. Lucky us to have a maritime-steppe micro-climate!
