Description
An excellent dark-flowered selection collected by the Lady herself near Algiers in 1937. Oh, to have seen this high-born Englishwoman wresting this treasure from the Algerian scrub! Impeccably dressed and dare that be sweat forming on the ivory brow? We can imagine her seeing this in flower in the bleak landscape and with nary a thought as to what might be considered proper, grasping the small shovel from the boot of the car and prising this find from between the rocks in which it was wedged. The broken nail did little to diminish the joy of this prize! Superb dark flowered form of this winter blooming Iris. There is nothing we need more here in the gray Northwest winters than flowers flying in the face of convention and this doughty Iris does just that as if it were channeling the spirit of Lady Mary Barnard. We've had reports of Iris unguicularis doing well in zone 6 Northeast gardens especially if sited against a south wall.
