Description

North American Royal Fern.  Native to the eastern half of North America, this deciduous fern can develop a short but substantial trunk with age that is quite intriguing in the garden.  Nice pinnate fronds can reach 3 feet in length and the spore clusters add some pizzazz.  This can take very wet soils which makes a great bog or pond edge plant and the wetter it is, the more sun it can handle but will also do well in deep shade.  Flora of North America recognizes this variety as being distinct from the European Osmunda regalis while some authorities regard this as simply O. regalis while others have elevated it to specific status as Osmunda spectabilis based on recent molecular work. Just some frondly disagreements.
