Description

Devil's Elder.  This is a surprisingly hardy large evergreen shrub to small 15'-20' tree from Chile and Argentina where it grows in shaded situations with it roots always in water such as along streams or bogs.  It has been perfectly happy in our shade garden without that access to free-flowing drink but it does allow for more planting possibilities knowing its natural growing conditions.  Ours plant in the garden has handled the mid-teens and as well as a brief dip to 10F and looks good.  The flowers are numerous small green things held in loose branched panicles and are actually kind of interesting despite their greenness.  The flowers give way to green round fruit which mature to a purplish brown.
